Catalan Language Proficiency Examination in Andorra

The Catalan language exam assesses the level of proficiency in the Catalan language. This exam is offered at six levels that correspond to the levels on the scale of CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Languages). This exam is required for admission to the education institutions in Andorra.

Eligibility: Candidates aged 16 or above can undertake this exam, irrespective of the nationality- resident or non-resident of Andorra, who wants to demonstrate their level of command in Catalan language. 

Exam Levels

Th exam levels are based on the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR).
  • Basic level- Level A2
  • Elementary level/Independent user- Level B1
  • Intermediate level/ Independent user - Level B2
  • Experienced user- Level C1
  • Experienced user- Level C2

Structure

Level A2 (Certificate of Basic Level of Catalan)

This level corresponds to the second level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Languages). This test measures whether the candidate has a proficiency in the use of language to carry out the tasks and communicate in the language in everyday social situations. 
  • Total duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
The Catalan proficiency exam-level A2 has 4 parts:

Adaptation to the communicative situation: This part assesses the candidate’s ability to communicate in the language for everyday purpose. In this part, about 15 interventions of communicative situations are recorded in a cassette. Candidates are required to answer the questions. There are 3 possible answers for each. 
  • Score: 15 points
  • Duration: 30 minutes

Listening: This part requires the candidate to understand the meaning and the central gist of the series of short oral texts, such as news, advertisements, notice, brief dialogues, etc. This part comprises of 4 exercises with a short oral texts for each activity, and 5 short dialogues. 

  • Total item: 20
  • Type of question:  Multiple-choice, true or false, and short answers 
  • Duration: 25 minutes
  • Score: 25 points
Reading Comprehension: In this part, candidates are required to read and understand the brief texts, such as announcements, surveys, news, notes, leaflets, etc.
  • Total items: 20
  • Type of question: True or false, multiple-choice (three options), and pairing
  • Duration: 40 minutes
  • Score: 25 points
Speaking/Oral Interaction and Expression:In this part, candidates are required to participate in a conversation and respond to day-to-day situations. This part has two sections. In the first section, candidates are required to express their viewpoints on simple issues/matters related to their experience. In the second section, candidates are required to understand and respond to 4 common daily situations. 
  • Score: 35 points
  • Duration: 15 minutes
In the oral part of test, a score of minimum 60% is required to pass, and 60% for the rest of the test is required. 

Level B1 (Catalan Elementary Level Certificate)

This level is equivalent to the third level of the CEFR.  The elementary level B1 exam consists of 5 parts.
  • Total duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Total points: 100
Reading Comprehension: In this part, candidates are required to understand the informative texts and simple texts of views. Candidates must understand the central information of the texts and its purpose. Texts can be news, letters, stories, articles, or leaflets.
  • Total texts: 4 with 20 items
  • Type of question: Multiple-choice (4 options), true or false, and matching
  • Duration: 35 minutes
  • Score: 20 points
Written Expression and Interaction: In this part, candidates are required to write a personal letter giving detailed information and facts.
  • Duration: 35 minutes 
  • Score: 20 points
Listening: In this part, candidates are required to understand and pull out relevant information from the brief texts given. Texts can be news, advertisements, daily issues information, short dialogues or messages.

This part contains 2 sections. The first section comprises of oral text of 15 items- true or false. The oral text is of 4 minutes.  The second section comprises of 5 brief oral texts with 1 item of multiple –choice each. All the texts are in a tape recorder. Candidates are required to listen to it and perform the task accordingly. 
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Score: 25 points
Vocabulary and Grammar: This part has 2 sections. Section 1 comprises of 25 items, 15 sentences to fill blanks and 10 processing. This section evaluates the grammar knowledge of the candidates, i.e. the usage of preposition, pronouns, verbs, etc. Section 2 comprises of 15 items to fill blanks, thus assessing the vocabulary knowledge. 
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Score: 15 points
Speaking/ Oral Interaction and Expression: In this part, candidates are required to take part in discussion of day-to-day topics/situations. This part has two sections. In the first section, candidate is required to talk to the examiner, and express his/her viewpoints on topic of general interest. In the second section, candidates are required to respond to the 5 situations of daily life. 
  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Score: 20 points
In the oral part of test, a score of minimum 60% is required to pass, and 60% for the rest of the test is required. 

Level B2 (Catalan Intermediate Level Certificate)

This level is equivalent to the fourth level of CEFR. The level B2 measures the candidate’s ability to deal with the communicative situations effectively and accurately.
  • Total duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
  • Total points: 100
This level comprises of 5 parts:

Reading Comprehension: This part requires the candidates to understand the texts given and express their opinions on the basis of reading.
  • Total items: 21
  • Type of questions: True or false, pairing and multiple-choice
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Score: 15 points
Writing/Written Interaction and Expression: In this part, candidates are required to write descriptive texts. The texts must be clear and logical. Knowledge of adequate vocabulary and linguistic structure is required. 
This part has 2 sections. The first section has a compulsory task which is to write a text log. The section has an informal task which is to write in a formal register.  The texts can be essay, letter, article, or report.
  • Duration:  90 minutes
  • Score: 30 points
Listening: This part requires candidates to understand the oral texts given and infer the meaning. The texts can be news commentary, dialogues, conferences, or controversial topic talks. This part comprises of 3 sections.
  • Total items: 15
  • Type of question: Multiple-choice and short answer questions 
  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Score: 15 points
Vocabulary and Grammar: This part requires the candidates to use appropriate lexical and grammatical structures to complete the sentences. 
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Score: 20 points
Speaking/ Oral Interaction and Expression: This part is done by 2 candidates simultaneously.  Both the candidates are required to interact with other, discuss a topic of general interest and solve a task. 
  • Duration: 15 minutes
  • Score: 20 points
This part has 3 sections-
  • Section 1 requires the candidates to discuss a topic for 1 minute.
  • Section 2 requires the candidate to reach to a decision mutually.
  • Section 3 requires the candidates to have a conversation. 

In the oral part of test, a score of minimum 60% is required to pass, and 60% for the rest of the test is required. 

Level C1 (Certificate of Proficiency in Catalan)

This level is equivalent to level 5 of the CEFR. This level assesses the mastery of the language. Level C1 has 4 parts.
  • Total duration: 3 hours 50 minutes
  • Total points: 100
Written Interaction and Expression: This part comprises of 2 sections.
  • Score: 40 points
  • Duration: 90 minutes
Section 1 consists of writing a formal letter of about 150 words. The letter must be clear and coherent. The correct usage of punctuation, lexical and syntactic structures must be done while writing.

Section 2 requires the candidates to write a formal text of about 200 words. There are 2 options, candidates can write on any one:
    • Option 1:  An opinion article or argue a viewpoint
    • Option 2: Commentary on some issue, a film, book or play 
Reading comprehension: This part measures the candidate’s understanding ability. Candidates are required to understand the written texts on general topics. 2 texts are given and candidates are required to read and understand them, and answer the questions accordingly. Also, you need to prepare a summary of the texts.The Texts are of about 500 to 600 words.
  • Type of texts: News, articles, reports, film or book reviews
  • Duration: 50 minutes
  • Score: 15 points
Vocabulary, grammar and spelling: This part assesses the vocabulary and grammatical knowledge of the candidates. It consists of 6 exercises- 3 morphosyntax exercise, and 3 phraseology and vocabulary exercise. 
  • Duration: 65 minutes
  • Score: 20 points
Speaking/ Oral interaction and expression: This part assesses the candidate’s ability to express themselves clearly and fluently in the Catalan language. 
  • Total duration: 25 minutes
  • Score: 25 points
This part consists of 3 exercises:
  • First exercise requires candidates to make a presentation from 2 photographs on a general topic/theme. The presentation must be of 2 minutes.
  • Second exercise requires candidates to solve a task given.
  • Third exercise requires candidates to read out loud a text of about 200 words.

In the oral part of test, a score of minimum 60% is required to pass, and 60% for the rest of the test is required. 

Level C2 (Certificate of Catalan)

Level C2 is equivalent to the sixth level on the scale of CEFR. This test indicates that the candidates can carry out activities at workplace or study, both in writing and oral Catalan language. Candidates can communicate in the language fluently and spontaneously. 

Level C2 has 3 parts:

Reading and Writing: This part requires the candidates to read and understand the text, and create a text which is coherent and clear, highlighting the main information coherently. This part comprises of 3 tasks- task processing, synthesis and assessment; and task argument.
  • Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Score: 55 points
Use of Language (Vocabulary and Grammar): This part requires the candidates to demonstrate that they have a vast linguistic repertoire and a god command of the Catalan language. This part comprises of 3 exercises: knowledge of vocabulary, knowledge of grammar, and lexical units pluriverbals. 
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Score: 40 points
Speaking/Oral Expression and Interaction: This part requires the candidates to read and understand the text, evaluate the pros and cons, and express their opinion on it. Candidates are required to produce a text which is precise, clear and grammatically accurate. This part comprises of 2 tasks- task 1 is a presentation or formal argumentation, and task 2 is a discussion with the examiner. 
  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Score: 25 points
To pass this level, a score of at least 60 out of 100 is required. 

Results

To pass any level, a score of at least 60 out of 100 points is needed. Results are declared as “fit” or “unfit”. Candidates are given an official document that contains the grades, scores, and final result-fit or unfit.
